People Experience Leads Kristin Carden and Elizabeth Farina led the class through a number of learning activities and concluded the event with a special visit from Owner-Operator Mike Freeman. Persistence and quick-thinking are two of the many qualities of Fairfield McDonald's Crew member James (Jim) Greggs. He jumped into action on Tuesday, March 29th when a camping van had caught fire in the parking lot.
"Well, the lady came off the Interstate (81) and into the parking lot. She got out of the van with her little dog," said Greggs, a US Navy veteran.
What happened next was a mix of chaos with clear thinking that saved the day. A wire shorted between the refrigerator and the water heater causing the side of the van to erupt in flames.
General Manager Misty Wade explained that a local regular customer Kris Ward had spotted the flames first and rushed inside the BP gas station, which is attached to the Fairfield McDonald's, to ask for a fire extinguisher. Their fire-fighting equipment was empty and Greggs jumped into action.
Greggs stated that he retrieved the fire extinguisher from the back of the house. "I just went out and just pulled the pin and he [Ward] put it out," Greggs said.
"It saved the woman's van actually ... It was like a camper with propane inside it."
By the time the Fairfield Rescue & Fire Department arrived, the vehicle fire was completely out. No one, including the dog, was injured in the incident.
"We are so lucky Jim [Greggs] joined our team last August," said Wade. "He is a favorite of our regulars because of his attention to detail."
For Greggs, it was his quiet way of thanking those who helped his father Jack, who was badly burned in a vehicle crash years ago. "I didn't get to thank them then, so this is my way of thanking them now," he said, "that's the way I look at it."
